After years of self-seeking exile
while hungering for home,
and a long day’s drive down I-95,
I see up ahead the sign:

SOUTH CAROLINA
STATE LINE

I make another sign
as I drive across,
touching fingers
to forehead and heart.

For me this will always be
a religious experience.
Naysayer Thomas Wolfe was wrong:
You can go home again.
